Mission Aviation Fellowship to Release Results of Landmark Study on Global Evangelism Barriers and Opportunities

Findings Will Shape Ministry Strategies for Next 20 Years;
Information Also Important to International Humanitarian Organizations

News Conference Call for Media June 6 at 10:30 a.m. Pacific

Call-in Phone Number: 402-756-9000 - Access Code: 260791#

Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) (www.maf.org), a Redlands, CA, -based aviation, communications and technology ministry serving more than 600 Christian and non-governmental organizations worldwide, will announce the results of "Operation ACCESS!" during a news conference call for the media June 6 at 10:30 a.m. Pacific time. "Operation ACCESS!," a five-year global research project, provides agencies with unprecedented, critical information to help shape international evangelism, ministry efforts and humanitarian strategies for the next 20 years.

The landmark study, which focuses on countries with pockets of people who are either forgotten or heretofore unreachable, identifies areas where transportation, communications and technology barriers prevent or impede access to the Gospel or to sustained resources, such as community development, healthcare and education.

"Research shows that despite the extraordinary missions efforts of the Church, three out of four people alive on the earth today still have not heard the Gospel," said Kevin Swanson, MAF president. "The Apostle Paul in Romans 10:15 talked about the need to send preachers. But preachers can't be sent unless the barriers that prevent their access and sustainability are overcome. Operation ACCESS! is a strategic 'roadmap' to accomplish this God-appointed task.."

Swanson likened the potential impact of "Operation ACCESS!" to the "10/40 Window" strategy popularized by missions strategist Luis Bush.

Ralph Winter, PhD., founder and former director general of the U.S. Center for World Missions and William Carey International University, said, "MAF's foundational re-analysis of its work and of mission work in general has produced a breathtaking new analysis of the challenge before us."

Charles H. Kraft, PhD., Professor of Anthropological and Intercultural Communication, Fuller Theological Seminary School of World Missions, called the study "one of the most promising projects I've seen in my 32 years at Fuller."

NOTE: The "Operation ACCESS!" news conference call will feature remarks from Swanson and Ghislaine Benney, research director. Questions from reporters will be welcome during the call.

Line access for the call is limited. Pre-registration is appreciated. To register, or for more information, contact Palmer Holt at 704-663-3303, or pholt@inchristcommunications.com.

Rev. Mark Whitlock, Program Director, 949-955-0014, ptm@usc.edu

A new program for clergy and lay leaders begins on June 1, 2006 with an address by Rev. Dr. J. Alfred Smith

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA. May 31, 2006: As African American pastors from the civil rights era enter their retirement years, clergy are concerned about passing on their legacy to the next generation of leaders. USC's Center for Religion and Civic Culture (www.usc.edu/crcc), has created a new program to allow senior clergy to train and mentor the next generation of leaders.

The Passing the Mantle Clergy and Lay Leadership Institute is an eight-week program that will train 30 black leaders in community organizing, economic development and church leadership strategies. In addition to classroom training, the program includes structured mentoring meetings with some of the leading ministers in the Los Angeles area.

The institute is led by the Rev. Dr. Cecil "Chip" Murray, Tanzy Professor of Christian Ethics at USC, and former pastor of the First African Methodist Episcopal Church. Rev. Mark Whitlock, founder and pastor of Christ Our Redeemer African Methodist Episcopal Church, and Rev. Eugene Williams, founder of Regional Congregations and Neighborhood Organizations, are co-directors of the program. The institute at USC's College of Letters, Arts & Sciences is made possible with support from The James Irvine Foundation.

"We need an extremely sophisticated pastor in the new generation. Passing the mantle on to them just means that somehow we'll finish the race," says Rev. Dr. Cecil "Chip" Murray.

On Thursday, June 1, the institute presents the first in a series of public lectures on faith and civic engagement. The Rev. Dr. J. Alfred Smith, senior pastor of Allen Temple Baptist Church, will deliver the lecture. Dr. Smith is author of On the Jericho Road, and is a longtime activist. He is the recipient of numerous civic and humanitarian awards and has been recognized as one of the Most Influential Black Americans by Ebony Magazine.

Event Schedule: The lecture will take place June 1, 2006 at 7:00 p.m.
Location: Lincoln Memorial United Church of Christ, 4126 Arlington Avenue, (at the corner of Arlington and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., in Los Angeles.)
Additional information: The lecture is free and open to the general public.

California Entrepreneurs Launch "Free Church Printing," With the Power of Internet Technology and 21st Century Design, to Create Cost-Effective Printing for Churches and Christian Organizations If you can type...then you can master FreeChurchPrinting.com's online design and printing services-with an extraordinary low price guarantee!

SAN CLEMENTE, CALIF. - Two Southern California entrepreneurs have blended Internet technology with a passion to help churches and ministries communicate the Christian message with creativity and excellence. FreeChurchPrinting.com (www.FreeChurchPrinting.com) is offering free tools to enable pastors, church leaders and concerned Christians to expand their outreach.

"If you can type, then in less than five minutes, you can customize our design templates in our easy-to-use online WebStudio(tm)," says Jason Pearson, co-founder of FreeChurchPrinting.com. The company offers three affordable options for churches and organizations that want to reduce their design and printing costs. And they're offering an amazing low-price guarantee on their design and print services.

Ministries can select the "Free Tools" option with award-winning designs for outreach events, sermon series and worship services of every style. The design and printing really are free. The company just adds a small per pack handling and no "mark-up" shipping fee.

A second option, the "Low Cost Custom" design, uses the online WebStudio(tm) so ministries can upload their logos, photos and other graphics to customize their outreach materials, church bulletins, banners and other print materials.

A third option, "Upload Your Art," is a cost-effective solution for professional graphic designers that features fast, quality printing at unbeatable prices.

Doug Martinez, co-founder, wants congregations and Christian organizations to excel at communicating the Christian faith (and their unique "brand") with high quality print materials. "Using FreeChurchPrinting.com, church leaders can now select or design their own newsletters, outreach invitations, brochures, letterhead, business cards, postcards, envelopes and presentation folders," says Martinez. "It's amazingly simple-and surprisingly affordable."

FreeChurchPrinting.com is the new one-stop shop for printing and design. Organizations and churches can now place their print orders from the convenience of their own computers. Secretaries, youth pastors, communication staff members and outreach teams can choose from any of the hundreds of pre-designed custom templates.

"It's the perfect solution for large organizations with a backlog of print projects-and an instant remedy for the pastor of a small church with a shortage of volunteers," adds Pearson.

Jewish Women's Organization Poised for Greater International Role

"It's time for Jews to re-examine the role of women," says new President of international organization

The 88-year-old International Council of Jewish Women (ICJW) is re-launching itself as a leading voice for Jewish women on issues of global relevance. At the ICJW May Conference, held every four years, Leah Aharonov was inaugurated as President, and she announced plans to lead the Council, which represents 52 Jewish women's organizations in 47 countries, in playing a more active role in representing Jews, and particularly women.

A New Jersey native, who moved to Israel 36 years ago, Leah's election represents the first time in 40 years that the ICJW President resides in Israel. The timing is appropriate as demographic data show that this year, for the first time, there are more Jews living in Israel than in any other country in the world, due to increased migration and shrinking Jewish communities elsewhere. This and other social issues are impacting the various ICJW affiliates around the world - from Eastern and West Europe, to South Africa, South America, the United States, Canada, Australia and even Hong Kong and Thailand, and the ICJW enables them to share their common concerns.

Females are under-represented in leadership and decision-making positions in Jewish communities around the globe, and Aharonov believes that women should not be given a seat at the table just because of their gender, but because they offer a different perspective on things. ICJW currently has consultative status as an NGO at the United Nations, and Aharonov is preparing to take the organization into a new era of leadership, particularly by increasing its representation of Jewish women in other international forums.

She will be leading ICJW as it works to establish a stronger global presence for Jewish women's organizations worldwide, to advance leaderships roles for Jewish women, foster greater understanding of the challenges facing Jews worldwide, and harness resources to benefit Jewish women, and through them their communities, around the world. ICJW will also prioritize consciousness raising on key issues such as economic equality and human rights issues such as the international trafficking of women.

For Leah's Aharonov's background bio, or to set up an interview, please contact Chevy Weiss at chevy@globalvisionsisrael.com.

Amos Oz, Robert Pinsky anchor new issue of Contemplate

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 30, 2006

MEDIA CONTACT:
Myrna Baron, 212-564-6711 x301
Executive Director

Writing by Amos Oz, A.B. Yehoshua and a former poet laureate, Robert Pinsky, anchors the latest issue of Contemplate: The International Journal of Cultural Jewish Thought, newly released by the Center for Cultural Judaism.

Contemplate is rare among Jewish literary journals-a fairly esoteric category itself-for publishing authors from around the world, including France, Israel, and Uruguay in this issue. "Several of the pieces have never appeared in English," said Myrna Baron, Contemplate's editor. "Which is essentially our goal: to bring this excellent Jewish writing to a wider audience."

To that end, the journal is geared toward secular, freethinking Jews - a description that applies to its writers as much as its readers. "Contemplate is for Jews with a strong secular Jewish identity, who separate fact from myth and are skeptical of institutionalized Judaism that does not make that distinction," said Baron.

Indeed, studies of Jewish demographics suggest a potentially large audience for a journal of secular Jewish writing. Nearly half of American adult Jews consider themselves "secular" or "somewhat secular," according to the 2001 American Jewish Identity Survey. That makes them the largest subset of American Jews, more populous than any of the five denominations, according to Baron.

The divisions among those groups (and within them) offer fertile ground for debate, as several of the pieces show. "Contemplate takes on politics, social justice, ethics and culture," said Baron. "It looks backward, at the history and cultures of the Jews, but also at the present: how do we articulate secular Judaism's goals? How do we resolve the tensions between secular and non-secular Jews today?"

Not all of the pieces are polemical (or even political), however. First person essays by Ilan Stavans and Lucette Valensi, and several pieces that might be classified as memoir, are also included. The writing is both intellectual and-a rarity for a journal of ideas-catchy. "God let me down on a bright summer night..." begins Valensi's piece, "A Room with a View." Another piece, "Reflections on a Belated Apostasy," by Naomi Seidman, is filled with tender, novelistic details of a Brooklyn childhood that was anything but tender.

Baron's editorial eye steered her towards writing that felt both scholarly and personal, vivid and intellectual. The pieces were winnowed from hundreds of articles culled from the web, various scholarly journals, and other sundry sources. The result is, not surprisingly, hard to classify. It practically cries out for its own compound category: Jewish literary journal of ideas.

Baron hopes that eclecticism will help it stand out. That, and an obvious passion for Jewish life and culture.

"No one who has read Ilan Stavans"-who contributed an essay on his favorite Jewish literature-"disputes that he's a brilliant thinker," she said. "But you also have to appreciate that he also cares deeply about Jewish culture and literature."

Contemplate is published by the Center for Cultural Judaism, which was established in 2003 in response to emerging new insights into American Jewish demography that confirm that the majority of Jews are secular. The Center for Cultural Judaism supports educational programs on behalf of this large, underserved population. Contemplate is available through the Center at 212-564-6711 x303, online at www.culturaljudaism.org, and from selected booksellers.

MinistryHome Takes Ministry Workers Online

SEATTLE, May 29, 2006 - Positioned to become the MySpace of the ministry community, MinistryHome today announced the launch of MinistryHome.org; a free online social networking site for missionaries, pastors, humanitarian workers and other ministry workers to help raise funds and build teams.

While other popular social networking sites are available, many ministry workers are hesitant to sign up on them due to fears of being associated with their non-ministry elements. MinistryHome.org now offers a safe and purpose-driven alternative.

"Whether you are working full-time for a major ministry organization or are a student volunteering a week to help out in the aftermath of Katrina, MinistryHome.org is a place for you to tell the world about what you're doing. In terms of accessing funding and resources for your ministry, there has never been anything like it." says Paul Payne, founder of MinistryHome.

Traditionally, ministry workers promote their ministries and build support teams on their own, often using photocopied newsletters. With many working in remote places, ministry workers can feel isolated from others serving in similar fields. Now, individuals can promote their ministries, raise funds, build teams, and network with like-minded individuals online with MinistryHome.org.

Individuals create custom personal and ministry profiles on MinistryHome.org in a matter of minutes, easily connecting their profiles to other online resources. Personal content from popular web services such as Blogger.com, Flickr.com and YouTube.com can be aggregated into MinistryHome profiles. All of this information is published immediately and is linked and searchable throughout the MinistryHome.org network. Several interactive tools encourage discovering ministries including a zoomable map pinpointing ministries worldwide.

Friends and supporters can keep up with ministry workers they are interested in by receiving automatic notifications of ministry updates, contacting their ministries and donating funds through MinistryHome.org. Being a part of a ministry-centered community such as MinistryHome.org gives ministry workers instant access to ministry-minded viewers.

For additional information on MinistryHome or MinistryHome.org, contact Paul Payne or visit www.MinistryHome.org. Free MinistryHome.org accounts are available for immediate registration at www.MinistryHome.org.

About MinistryHome.org:
Founded in 2003, MinistryHome serves over 400 individual ministries throughout the world with its MinistryHome Sites product which provides inexpensive, easy-to-use websites enabling ministry workers to keep in contact with their supporters. MinistryHome launched its free online community, MinistryHome.org, in 2006.

PRESS RELEASE

Date: 24 May 2006
For Immediate Release

For background information: http://www.bahai.org/
Contact: Bani Dugal, New York office: 212-803-2500 / mobile: 914-329-3020

NEW YORK (24 May 2006) –Iranian officials have arrested 54 Baha’is in the city of Shiraz, the Baha’i International Community has learned. They are mostly youth and were all engaged in humanitarian service when they were arrested. It is one of the largest number of Baha’is taken at once since the 1980s. The specific charges are not clear, though in the past, Baha’is have been arrested summarily on false charges.

The arrests occurred on Friday, 19 May, while the Baha’is, along with several other volunteers who were not Baha’is, were teaching classes to underprivileged children in a school as part of a UNICEF community service activity conducted by a local non-governmental organization. At the time of the arrests, they had in their possession a letter of permission from the Islamic Council of Shíráz. They also carried the letter of permission in each of their classes.

The nature of the charges against the Baha’is is unknown at this time. The day following the arrests, a judge told family members that the detainees would be freed soon. As of today, it appears that all of the non-Baha’is and one Baha’i junior youth have been released without having to post bail.

The arrests coincided with raids on six Baha’i homes during which notebooks, computers, books, and other documents were confiscated. In the last 14 months, 72 Baha’is across Iran have been arrested and held for up to several weeks.

“These new arrests in Shiraz, coming after more than a year of ‘revolving door’ detentions, bring the total number of Baha’is who have been arrested without cause to more than 125 since the beginning of 2005,” said Bani Dugal, principal representative of the Baha’i International Community to the United Nations.

“Taken all together, this pattern of arbitrary arrests and detentions amount to the purest form of religious persecution and reflect nothing less than a calculated effort by the Iranian government to keep the Baha’i community utterly off balance and in a state of terror,”
Ms. Dugal said.

The arrests come against a backdrop of increasing concern by international human rights monitors that the Iranian Government is escalating its 25-year-long campaign of persecution against the 300,000-member Baha’i community of Iran, the largest religious minority in that country.

In March, the UN Special Rapporteur of the Commission on Human Rights on freedom of religion or belief released news of a secret 29 October 2005 letter from the Iranian military high command ordering police and Revolutionary Guard units to “identify” and “monitor” members of the Baha'i community of Iran, saying the existence of such a letter made her “highly concerned.”

Moreover, since late 2005, more than 30 mostly negative and often defamatory articles about the Baha’is and their religion have appeared in “Kayhan,” the official Tehran daily newspaper. Radio and television broadcasts have likewise increasingly condemned the Baha’is and their beliefs.

Since January, in addition to the 54 arrested in Shiraz last Friday, seven Baha’is have been arrested and held for periods of up to one month in Kermanshah, Isfahan, and Tehran.

Among those arrested in January was Mrs. Roya Habibi of Kermanshah, who has reported that she was interrogated for eight hours, with questions focused on her role as coordinator of a program to provide religious instruction in the Baha’i Faith.

In the court document that sets out the charges against her, Mrs. Habibi, who is currently out on bail, “is charged with teaching the Bahaism sect and acting in an insulting manner towards all that is holy in Islam.”

“While it is often difficult to get details on the charges against Baha’is, there is no doubt that most of them – like the case against Mrs. Habibi – are motivated purely by religious intolerance and prejudice,” said Ms. Dugal.

Last year, some 65 Baha’is were arrested and held for periods of time ranging from a few days to more than a month.

While most were held less than a week, others were jailed for up to three months. Some of the prisoners last year were held incommunicado, in unknown locations, while their families desperately searched for them. Last year also, government agents conducted prolonged searches of many of their homes, confiscating documents, books, computers, copiers and other belongings.

In the 1980s, some 200 Baha’is were killed or executed. Thousands were arrested and hundreds were imprisoned, many for long periods. In recent years, in the face of international monitoring, the executions and long-term imprisonments have stopped.

SPOKANE, WA – (May 24, 2006) – In today’s culture there is a confusing mixture of fact and fiction which threatens to place a question mark on fundamental Christian beliefs. Faith And Reason Bring Bill Moyers Back To PBS With New Series Beginning June 23

Moyers and the World’s Storytellers Confront the Pressing Questions
Facing a World Divided Over God and Religion

“What kind of a god is it that's upset by a cartoon in Danish?” asks Salman Rushdie in the premiere episode of Bill Moyers on Faith & Reason. Rushdie is among the prominent authors featured in the PBS series, which takes on the most persistent questions facing us today. Is the vision of religious tolerance just a utopian dream? Are we destined to live out this century in a sectarian hell? In a world where religion is poison to some and salvation to others, how do we live together?

In the tradition of the landmark series Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth, Bill Moyers on Faith & Reason, premiering Friday, June 23 at 9 p.m. on PBS (check local listings), features provocative conversations with unique voices drawn from the group assembled at the PEN World Voices Festival in New York: Margaret Atwood, Mary Gordon, Martin Amis, Richard Rodriguez, and others. During the course of seven hour-long weekly episodes, Moyers takes viewers on a rare journey deep into these writers’ work and their own experience to plumb new ways of thinking about the role of religion in shaping our world. The resulting conversations provide revelatory observation on the long-running argument between believers and disbelievers, and enlightening perspective on the fear, violence and intolerance that grip our times. Reverent, irreverent, thoughtful and often humorous, these authors deliver fresh perspective that taps into an undercurrent in the national discussion and will resonate with the religious, the non-religious, and those in between.

“We're about eight Einsteins away from getting any kind of handle on the universe,” says Martin Amis, who is regarded by many critics as one of the most influential and innovative voices in contemporary British fiction.

“Why didn't Jesus write anything?” says Margaret Atwood, author of The Blind Assassin, Cat’s Eye, and The Handmaid’s Tale. “I think because once you write something down it becomes a permanent fixture and it becomes dogma.”

Mary Gordon, the well-known American author of Spending, The Company of Women, The Rest of Life, brings her viewpoint as a Christian and as a writer to the discussion, saying: “I like the religious perspective because it seems to create a language that explains more things about human beings than any other language.”

“How do we keep the public space between reason and faith, where most of us spend our lives, from becoming a no-man’s land of constant warfare between absolutes?” asks Moyers. “Writers of great literature give us the kind of perspective on that no-man’s land you can only get from the creative mind—a mind that because of the craft, conscience, and process of writing has grappled with religion in its complexities, it subtleties, and its extremes. They help us come to terms with the fact that in this new age, any transformative discussion must be one of reason and faith, not reason versus faith.”

Bill Moyers on Faith & Reason will be supported by an extensive companion Web site at www.pbs.org/moyers where visitors can interact, give feedback, and discuss the issues presented in the series. After the broadcast, each episode will be available in its entirety for viewing online.

“When there is conflict between the liberty of speech and the beliefs of private individuals, the liberty of speech must always take precedence,” says Rushdie, who spent five years underground after death threats and a fatwa by Ayatollah Khomeini calling for his assassination after publication of his novel The Satanic Verses. “Otherwise every other liberty, including freedom of religious observance, is put into question.”

The authors featured in Bill Moyers on Faith & Reason include:

* Martin Amis, Great Britain

* Margaret Atwood, Canada

* Mary Gordon, United States

* David Grossman, Israel

* Colin McGinn, Great Britain/United States

* Richard Rodriguez, United States

* Salman Rushdie, India/Great Britain

* Anne Provoost, Belgium

* Jeanette Winterson, Great Britain

Bill Moyers on Faith & Reason is funded by The Herb Alpert Foundation and our sole corporate funder Mutual of America Life Insurance Company. The series is a production of Public Affairs Television, Inc. and is a national presentation of Thirteen/WNET New York. Executive Editors: Bill Moyers and Judith Davidson Moyers. Executive Producers: Felice Firestone and Judy Doctoroff O'Neill; Series Producer: Sally Roy; Editors: Lewis Erskine and Andy Fredericks; Editorial Producer: Rebecca Wharton; Interview Development Producer: Ana Cohen Bickford.

Museum of Radio & Television

New York, New York.

“Given that there are thousands of compelling, passionate religious leaders in America, then how come we repeatedly see only four or five of the same faces of religious leaders on television?" asked Rabbi Daniel Brenner, Director of the Center of Multifaith Education at Auburn Theological Seminary.

That question is the driving force behind the creation of the Auburn Media Speakers Bureau, a new initiative by the Manhattan-based seminary, that is changing the public face of religious leadership. The seventeen speakers represent an impressive religious, ethnic, and gender diversity. The participants include the Tibetan Buddhist The Sakyong, Jamgön Mipham Rinpoche; Evangelical Latino leader Rev. Luis Cortés; Muslim community leader Daisy Khan; and Orthodox Rabbi Steve Greenberg. Also included are prominent scholars on religion including the nation’s leading expert on fundamentalism, Scott Appleby, and prominent biblical scholars Walter Brueggemann and Pamela Eisenbaum. Jenna Tiitsman, Media Coordinator, remarked, “We are ready to not only link producers with a pool of inspiring and passionate religious leaders, but to actively engage the news media with breaking commentary on a range of public issues.”

The project grew out of a desire to change the usual presentation of religious leaders in the media—particularly on radio and television. “We are accustomed to hearing from the extremes in religious life,” said Macky Alston, Director of Auburn Media, “but rarely do we hear from those responsible, prophetic leaders who speak for the broad range of believers. This bureau aims to lift up their voices.”

Rev. Dr. Jacqui Lewis, a Speakers Bureau member and Senior Minister at Middle Collegiate Church in New York City, remarked, "I've been waiting decades for television to turn to women of faith and religious minorities in matters of ethical debate. This project is the first initiative that I know of to take that mission seriously."

Callie Crossley, a former producer of ABC’s 20/20, and the current media coach of the Bureau explained the media training process: "Our job is to help faith leaders craft their message so that it cuts through the white noise."

The launch, which will feature four religious leaders: The Rev. Luis Cortés Jr., Mona Eltahawy, The Rev. Dr. James A. Forbes Jr., Rabbi Steven Greenberg, and producer and Auburn’s media coach Callie Crossley, will be moderated by Cokie Roberts, and complimented by the launch of the Auburn Media Web site, www.auburnmedia.org.

New Video Bible Release Challenges Da Vinci Code Fiction

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

PITTSBURGH, PA-May 19, 2006- WatchWORD Productions recently signed an agreement with Good New Holdings of Los Angeles to release the world's first Video Bible as the ultimate Christian answer to The Da Vinci Code movie. The WatchWORD Bible(r) presents the entire New Testament on video in a 10-DVD boxed set ($50), touting itself as "The Easiest Way to Read and Understand the Bible."

"We produced the New Testament to help address biblical illiteracy," says WatchWORD Bible creator Jim Fitzgerald. "I wanted to reach the many millions of people who find it difficult to read the Bible-even with good intentions."

He believes the timing is providential. Ron Howard's Da Vinci Code film, based on the block-buster novel, will tell millions that Jesus Christ was not the Son of God who died for our sins, but only a prophet that fathered a child by Mary Magdalene. The film and the novel debunk the New Testament, and with it, the foundation of Western Civilization.

The concern is real. A recent Barna survey shows that 2 million U.S readers had their faith changed by reading the novel. In England, the effect has been even greater. A survey last week revealed that 60% of Da Vinci Code readers believe that Jesus had children by Mary Magdalene. This is a big deal, in a country where one in five adults has read the novel. And here comes the movie juggernaut with the slogan, "Seek the Truth."

"When people don't know the Bible, they can believe a work of fiction like The Da Vinci Code," says Fitzgerald. "But now anyone can watch the New Testament for themselves. We've made it effortless and compelling. The truth can speak for itself."

The 14-year WatchWORD Bible project brings the world's all-time best-seller to a whole new format that Fitzgerald believes will change the way millions of people read the Bible in the 21st century-they can "watch it" on their TVs, computers, portable DVD players, iPods and cell phones.

The 26-hour production includes thousands of on-location scenes, word-for-word text on screen, narration, original music soundtrack and effects. Viewers can choose individual books or chapters from the menus. The modern language Contemporary English Version translation is used by Protestants and Catholics (an Imprimatur).

"The Da Vinci Code will stir lots of conversation about the Bible, Jesus Christ and the history of the Christian Church," said George Barna, founder of The Barna Group whose surveys are the most quoted among American evangelicals. "The WatchWORD Bible provides answers to many of those questions in the same movie-like format that raised them in the first place."

Good News Holdings has arranged for the DVDs to be available initially to over 140,000 churches through Christian Copyright Licensing International at www.seetheword.com or (800) 444-1988, and Promise Keepers.

From decline to growth: St. Bartholomew’s to share success stories during “Reinventing Church” conference in Manhattan, June 11–13

Contact: Bob Johnson
Director of Communications

johnson@stbarts.org

NEW YORK — In less than ten years, St. Bartholomew’s Church in Manhattan grew from a church on the brink of closing its doors to a growing, thriving congregation and – for three days in June – leaders of the church will share how they turned the church around during the fifth annual “Reinventing Church” conference.

The conference is scheduled from Sunday, June 11 – Tuesday, June 13 at St. Bartholomew’s Church, which is located at Park Avenue at 51st Street, Manhattan. The conference fee is $250 ($200 for returning churches), which includes plenary sessions, workshops, some meals and materials. To register, call 212-378-0222 or visit www.stbarts.org.

“We think what’s interesting about us is that we have maintained our Anglican identity and extended it through a radical welcome,” said the Rev. William McD. Tully, St. Bart’s rector. “We also have refreshed, strengthened and diversified our worship; connected with the unchurched; and re-established our frayed connection with our city. We offered this conference the last four years and learned what people wanted to hear again and how we could improve and update our teaching of principles and best practices this time around.”

Tully will again offer his popular plenary talks tracing the St. Bart’s story, the principles and best practices we use and some real war stories from the front lines of leadership and change.

Some of the scheduled workshops include “Empowering Lay Leaders,” “Models of Social Ministry,” “New Avenues in Interfaith Work,” “Communications and Advertising,” “Management for Growth,” “Enterprises,” “Music and Worship” and “Information Technology.”

PHILADELPHIA -- The American Friends Service Committee, an international social justice organization with national headquarters in Philadelphia, today announced its opposition to sending National Guard troops to the U.S. Mexico Border.

The Service Committee fears that placing National Guard troops on the border with Mexico will exacerbate the “state-of siege” mentality that has extended over the region since militarization of the region began in the name of immigration enforcement over a decade ago.

“When policing is done by soldiers, our communities become the enemy,” said Pedro Rios, interim co-director of the San Diego office of the American Friends Service Committee. “The killing of 17-year old high school student, Ezequiel Hernandez, by Marines along the Border proves how dangerous this could be.”

The Texas youth was shot to death in 1997 while herding his family’s goats after Marines patrolling the border determined that he fit the profile of a drug smuggler.

The use of deadly force by Border Patrol agents claims innocent lives each year, the group observes. In heavily Latino neighborhoods, racial profiling is rampant. Border communities face a litany of arbitrary detentions and arrests by the Border Patrol, the group maintains

The Service Committee stands with other immigrant rights organizations along the border that are standing in opposition to the “Goode Amendment” recently approved by the House of Representatives that was attached to the Defense Department fiscal year 2007 authorization bill. President Bush is expected to announce this new proposal during his address to the nation Monday evening.

The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) supports the rights and dignity of all people, regardless of legal immigration status. Through its national initiative, Project Voice, the Service Committee seeks to strengthen the voices of immigrants and immigrant-led organizations in setting the national agenda for policy and human rights.

AFSC’s U.S. Mexico Border Program was created in 1977 to address economic imbalances and document systemic human rights abuses in employment, housing, education, services and law enforcement. AFSC has worked with rural and urban development programs in Mexico and with migrant farm workers in California since 1940.

A full statement can be found at the AFSC website at afsc.org.

MERRILL, Wis. — Spotting trouble before it occurs is one of the most valuable preventative tools there is.

That’s why supervisors have to keep a wary eye on water activities at all times.

Church Mutual Insurance Company has decided to make their jobs easier with the ultimate goal being a reduction of drowning incidents across the United States.

Our new Swimmer Safety Program, designed for religious camps and organizations, is built around fluorescent, color-coded wristbands issued to swimmers that denote their abilities in the water.

“Every person who will be going into the water needs to be screened to determine swimming ability,” Church Mutual Risk Control Manager Rick Schaber said. “And access to the water needs to be based on that ability.”

Nonswimmers don red wristbands, intermediate yellow and qualified green. Nonswimmers must stay in designated areas of the water, intermediates aren’t allowed in water above their shoulders and qualified swimmers have access to all approved areas.

“These bright-colored wristbands are intended to allow lifeguards and other supervisors to quickly scan the swimming area to see if a poor swimmer has wandered beyond the safe zone,” Schaber added.

The free Church Mutual Swimmer Safety Program Kit includes evaluation forms, laminated evaluation guidelines and the wristbands.

“Planning for safety around the water is as important for a religious organization that sponsors one trip to a pool each year as it is for a camp that welcomes hundreds of new visitors each week,” Schaber pointed out.

The program was tested in 2005 as a direct result of an almost doubling in drowning incidents in 2004 (11) among customers. Since 1998, 38 Church Mutual customers have drowned — all either children or young adults.

“By properly screening each swimmer and utilizing our color-coded wristbands, we’re confident accidents involving water-related activities will be reduced,” Schaber said.

Church Mutual is the leading insurer of religious institutions in the United States with more than 94,000 religious organizations.

Foundation Established to Assist Clergy

Website: www.dcce.org
E-mail: info@dcce.org
Phone: 888.373.7492

DAVIDSON, N.C., May 16, 2006 - In response to a growing crisis among clergy leaving the ministry due to stress, the Davidson Clergy Center Endowment (DCCE) has been established to serve clergy and their families. DCCE is a not-for-profit, tax-exempt foundation established to assist pastors vulnerable to career burnout and family stress as well as those seeking renewal. The goal of the endowment is to develop and distribute funds to provide scholarships and financial assistance for the spiritual, physical and mental wellness of clergy.

DCCE is responding to mounting evidence that spiritual caregivers are not taking care of themselves. According to a special report of the Alban Institute there is a developing crisis among clergy, including a severe shortage among major denominations. The study indicates that fewer young people are entering the ministry while those who are ordained are leaving in record numbers. Particularly alarming are the drops in the number of clergy age 35 and younger. In the past three decades the percentage of clergy has fallen from 25 percent to 7 percent in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), from 19 to less than 4 percent for the Episcopal Church and from 18 percent to less than 8 percent for the Lutheran Church.

Dr. Louis Reed, a nationally recognized pastoral counselor and writer from Charlotte, comments on the reasons for clergy burnout. His work specializes with pastors and notes they face conflicting stressors. Reed says that in American religion, local pastors are being judged by a consumer religion and mega-churches, while they are also expected to shoulder the burden of their members' emotional and spiritual security. "Responsibility and blame for inevitable failures are laid at the feet of pastoral leadership, contributing to the current high rate of burnout and disillusionment among clergy and fragmentation within congregations."

Pastors are attending wellness programs for varied personal and professional reasons-congregational conflicts, denominational stress, as well as time for restoration while on sabbatical or retreat. DCCE will assist clergy through programs that support health care, follow-up assistance and other needs.

The Rev. Don Olinger, a pastor serving a congregation in New York recently attended a clergy wellness program in Davidson, North Carolina. He comments, "It was one of the most nurturing and healing experiences I have had, and it came at a time that was good for me. My experience was of a safe, caring place that blessed me in my brokenness."

DCCE's will serve pastors of all denominations throughout the nation. The Endowment's president, George Jacobs, said "While there are effective and helpful programs for clergy and congregations, our research has found that at least half of individual pastors seeking care are unable to attend programs or seek counseling because of limited health insurance or personal incomes. Pastors are real people, with the same strengths and weaknesses of those they serve. Our role is to make it financially possible for them to have access to the resources they need to have joyful and effective ministries."

DCCE invites inquiries from organizations, individuals and foundations who are interested in helping clergy in all situations-including pastors serving areas affected by the Gulf Coast hurricanes and chaplains serving at home or abroad.

Canada's S-VOX brings Christian content to the iPod generation with myGodPod

Unique podcasting service allows Christians to "dock and walk"

TORONTO, May 15, 2006 - The millions of Christians plugged into the online world now have a quick and easy new way to enjoy a wealth of daily devotional content: myGodPod, a unique faith-based podcasting service launched today by Canada's S-VOX.

Bill Roberts, President and CEO of Toronto-based S-VOX, said the subscription-based service will change the way Christians practice their daily spiritual development.

"The concept is 'dock and walk,'" said Mr. Roberts. "In the morning, you dock your iPod or other MP4-compatible player and download the content, which is refreshed daily. And then it goes with you as you walk through your day. We call it 'Devotions on the Go.'"

Users can sample the service on a free trial basis at www.myGodPod.com, and then sign up for a full subscription. Subscribers will receive up to 40 minutes of daily devotional readings, sermon segments, Bible readings and contemplative prayer exercises, as well as readings from Christian books and songs by Christian recording artists. They will also enjoy complete access to the myGodPod archives.

Suzanna Mandryk, Vice President, Communications and Marketing for S-VOX, said myGodPod offers great value for Christians seeking fresh and original devotional material to enrich the daily practice of their faith.

"Spiritual podcasts, or 'Godcasts,' are currently the fasting-growing form of programming worldwide in this emerging medium," Ms. Mandryk said. What sets myGodPod apart from other offerings is strong branding, well-produced content that is powerfully relevant to the audience, and the sheer convenience of being able to get everything you need for your daily devotion, in a customizable format, with a single mouse-click."

Ms. Mandryk said myGodPod also has the advantage of not being affiliated with any single ministry or faith organization. "This gives us the flexibility to select the best available content for our programs," she said.

S-VOX plans to market myGodPod aggressively to the international marketplace, using traditional media as well as online and community-based avenues. Said Ms. Mandryk: "We believe word of mouth will play an important role in myGodPod's success."

S-VOX has worked with Welland, Ont.-based Trillennium Media Group (www.trillenniummediagroup.com) on the development of content for myGodPod, and with PodChannels Inc. (www.podchannels.com) of Toronto, licensing their social media network platform.

S-VOX is a diversified multimedia enterprise that offers high-quality television and digital content for individuals seeking spiritual awareness and personal growth. S-VOX properties include: VisionTV, Canada's multi-faith and multicultural television broadcaster, along with the digital television services One: the Body, Mind & Spirit channel and The Christian Channel. Other ventures include: VisionTV International, a partnership with Toronto-based Ellis Entertainment that develops, produces and distributes original programming for the global marketplace, and Christian Media Sales, a product marketing and media buying company.

Olive Tree Bible Software Releases iLumina MOBILE ESV

SPOKANE, WA – (May 4, 2006) – In partnership with Tyndale House Publishers and Crossway Books, Olive Tree has released a new iLumina MOBILE package that includes the ESV Bible in place of the NIV. Targeted to a new group of Bible software users, iLumina MOBILE ESV will help Olive Tree continue to expand their customer base and meet the diverse demands of the Bible software community. iLumina MOBILE, both the ESV and NIV versions, are based on the PC iLumina Gold version, but have been retooled to support Pocket PC and Palm OS devices. iLumina MOBILE is now available as the market's first digitally animated Bible and encyclopedia suite-right in the palm of your hand.

"What impressed me most about the handheld is that nothing of the original essence of the PC has been lost. If anything, the graphics are brighter and crisper in the scaled down version," says W. Victor Kore, Marketing Manager from Beers Publishing Group Tyndale House Publishers. "The user interface is well thought out too. From the main page, you are only a tap away from the Bible, the encyclopedia, timeline or multimedia. It is not only functional, but a pleasure to look at."

From Geoff Dennis, Executive VP, Crossway Books and Bibles – “Crossway Books is excited to partner with Olive Tree and Tyndale for this excellent electronic study tool. The ESV Bible is the fastest growing Bible version in the marketplace, and is uniquely suited for personal and corporate Bible study given its accuracy, beauty, and readability. We trust that God will use this software tool to deepen each user’s love for Christ!”

iLumina MOBILE - a software suite that takes PDA Bible Study to a new level. The combination of material included in the package gives the user a wealth of information to enhance their Bible Study experience. Included in the mobile version are the ESV, NLT and KJV Bibles, a select number of video animations and tours, along with maps, timelines, and other useful information resources. The specially designed user interface works wonderfully to make this wealth of information just a tap away!
