"Religion & Ethics Newsweekly" Honored with Silver Hugo and Angel Awards

Washington, D.C., March 22, 2006 - RELIGION & ETHICS NEWSWEEKLY, the Thirteen/WNET New York-produced PBS news magazine program hosted by Bob Abernethy, has been recognized for broadcast excellence in industry awards competitions sponsored by Cinema/Chicago and Excellence in Media.

RELIGION & ETHICS NEWSWEEKLY received a Silver Hugo Award in the 2006 Chicago International Television Competition for programs submitted in the "TV News Magazine Series" category. Presented by Cinema/Chicago and the Chicago International Film Festival, the Hugo Awards recognize the best in television from around the world with winners demonstrating "unparalleled creativity, technical virtuosity and strong production values."

RELIGION & ETHICS NEWSWEEKLY was also honored with six Silver Angel Awards for the following reports: "Impossible Choices," "Sister Mary Andrew Matesich" and "Faith and Family in America, Part Two: Religion and Parenting" produced by Susan Grandis Goldstein and reported by Betty Rollin; "Buddhist Tiger Temple" and "Gerard Straub" produced by Trent Harris and featuring correspondent Lucky Severson; and "Right to Live" produced by Nicole See with correspondent Fred de Sam Lazaro. Since 1977, Excellence in Media has recognized outstanding achievements in various fields of communications that have moral, spiritual or social impact through the Silver Angel Awards.

In addition to these recent industry honors, the program has received three previous Hugo Awards and 17 Silver Angel Awards. The show has also been the recipient of more than 75 additional industry awards including the prestigious Sigma Delta Chi Award, three Gracie Allen Awards(r), seven CINE Golden Eagle Awards, nine New York Festival Awards, three Chicago TV Fest and three Clarion Awards.

RELIGION & ETHICS NEWSWEEKLY is a one-of-a-kind television newsmagazine program offering insightful coverage and analysis of the news, people, events and trends behind the headlines and exploring how religion shapes both national and international events. Major funding is provided by Lilly Endowment, Inc. with additional support from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and Mutual of America Life Insurance Company.
