PHILADELPHIA (MAY 1) — In a statement released today, American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), an international social justice organization, calls on the Bush administration to “immediately end its recently unveiled, Secure Borders Initiative, which calls for multi-state raids, increased militarization of the southern border, and the harassment and intimidation of immigrants.”

According to the AFSC, the Secure Borders Initiative recently unveiled by the Department of Homeland Security, “puts the civil rights of every citizen at risk and exacerbates the possibility of unwarranted retribution on workers.”

The highly publicized U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid of Texas-based IFCO Systems affiliated facilities in 26 states, and the recent detention of 183 people in South Florida, some of whom just happened to be in the area, are causing heightened trepidation among undocumented workers. The recent announcement by Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, targeting employers who hire undocumented workers, has caused added concern.

The Service Committee urged the administration to immediately “stop all raids or the detention of immigrant workers employed at companies, businesses, factories and other job sites throughout the country,” and questioned the “reasoning behind the U.S. Senate’s recent approval of an amendment to allocate additional funds to continue the militarization of the nation’s southern border.”

The full document Home of the Free, or Land of the Raids, can be viewed at the American Service Committee website at www.afsc.org.
