NEW YORK –The Center for Religious Inquiry at St. Bartholomew’s Church, The Carnegie Council for Ethics and International Affairs and the Boston-based Interreligious Center for Public Life will present a series of forums, The Moral Nation? Alternative Voices, in Boston and New York City during the months of May and June.

To register or for more information, call (212) 378-0222 or visit www.stbarts.org.

“In an effort to counter the current conservative religious trend in public discourse,” said Rabbi Leonard A. Schoolman, director of the Center for Religious Inquiry, “we intend to jointly present programs featuring a range of alternative and diverse religious voices.”

Here are the forums:

Are We a Christian Nation? - Thursday, May 25th at 7:30PM
Andover Newton Theological School in Newton Centre, Mass.
What do preachers mean when they call for a new morality? What do they mean when they refer to the United States as a “Christian Nation?” What would the impact of a “Christian Nation” be on America’s diverse population? Speakers: Diana Eck. Ph.D., Harvard University; the Rev. Arthur Kennedy, University of St. Thomas; Rabbi David Gordis, president, Hebrew College.

Just War - Thursday, June 1st at 5:30PM
Merrill House in New York City
Has preventive war become the new standard? Is this a welcome trend? What does “just war” look like in practice? Panel: Joel Rosenthal, president, The Carnegie Council on Ethics and International Affairs; Jean Bethke Elshtain, Ph.D., University of Chicago; Laura Spelman, University of Chicago.

Intelligent Design - Tuesday, June 6th at 7:30PM
Center for Religious Inquiry at St. Bartholomew’s Church in New York City
Adherents of intelligent design state that the universe is so complex it could not have developed or evolved by accident; it must therefore be the conscious, willed product of a designer. What about evolution? Are science and religion doomed to always be in opposition? Speakers: The Rev. William McD. Tully, rector, St. Bartholomew’s Church; Robert Pollack, Ph.D., Columbia University; Mark Kirschner, Ph.D., Harvard Medical School; John Haught, Ph. D., Georgetown University.
