New York, New York.

“Given that there are thousands of compelling, passionate religious leaders in America, then how come we repeatedly see only four or five of the same faces of religious leaders on television?" asked Rabbi Daniel Brenner, Director of the Center of Multifaith Education at Auburn Theological Seminary.

That question is the driving force behind the creation of the Auburn Media Speakers Bureau, a new initiative by the Manhattan-based seminary, that is changing the public face of religious leadership. The seventeen speakers represent an impressive religious, ethnic, and gender diversity. The participants include the Tibetan Buddhist The Sakyong, Jamgön Mipham Rinpoche; Evangelical Latino leader Rev. Luis Cortés; Muslim community leader Daisy Khan; and Orthodox Rabbi Steve Greenberg. Also included are prominent scholars on religion including the nation’s leading expert on fundamentalism, Scott Appleby, and prominent biblical scholars Walter Brueggemann and Pamela Eisenbaum. Jenna Tiitsman, Media Coordinator, remarked, “We are ready to not only link producers with a pool of inspiring and passionate religious leaders, but to actively engage the news media with breaking commentary on a range of public issues.”

The project grew out of a desire to change the usual presentation of religious leaders in the media—particularly on radio and television. “We are accustomed to hearing from the extremes in religious life,” said Macky Alston, Director of Auburn Media, “but rarely do we hear from those responsible, prophetic leaders who speak for the broad range of believers. This bureau aims to lift up their voices.”

Rev. Dr. Jacqui Lewis, a Speakers Bureau member and Senior Minister at Middle Collegiate Church in New York City, remarked, "I've been waiting decades for television to turn to women of faith and religious minorities in matters of ethical debate. This project is the first initiative that I know of to take that mission seriously."

Callie Crossley, a former producer of ABC’s 20/20, and the current media coach of the Bureau explained the media training process: "Our job is to help faith leaders craft their message so that it cuts through the white noise."

The launch, which will feature four religious leaders: The Rev. Luis Cortés Jr., Mona Eltahawy, The Rev. Dr. James A. Forbes Jr., Rabbi Steven Greenberg, and producer and Auburn’s media coach Callie Crossley, will be moderated by Cokie Roberts, and complimented by the launch of the Auburn Media Web site, www.auburnmedia.org.
