DETROIT - The 13th annual Ancient Christianity and African American Conference will be held June 22-25 at St. Paul of the Cross Passionist Retreat Center, 23333 Schoolcraft Road, and other venues in the city and in the metropolitan area - the first time metro Detroit will host this national event.

The conference is sponsored by the Brotherhood of St. Moses the Black, a national organization of African-American Orthodox Christians, and locally by two Detroit-based organizations, the Council of Orthodox Christian Churches of Metropolitan Detroit (COCC) and St. Andrew House Center for Orthodox Christian Studies.

The basic mission of the brotherhood is to "Discover the African roots of the Ancient Christian Church". The theme of this year's conference is: "Forgiveness: Bridging Racial Barriers to Achieve Harmony in Christ".

"For those who are searching for the roots of the early church, it can come as a revelation to discover how deep in Africa they are," said the Very Rev. Roman Star, pastor of St. Innocent Orthodox Church, 23300 W. Chicago Road, Redford, and president of the COCC. "The faith of the many African saints of the early Christian centuries, such as St. Moses the Black, is still alive today."

The conference will feature testimonials by individual witnesses; exhibits, talks and discussion groups on a variety of subjects, including icons, liturgics and music; and a visit to Dormition of the Mother of God Monastery in Rives Junction, near Jackson, Mich.

One of the highlights of the conference will be a free public lecture program at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, 315 E. Warren Ave., on the evening of June 23. The program will feature a talk by the Rev. Moses Berry "Linking Ancient African Christianity to the Afro American Experience". Fr. Berry is an Orthodox priest and pastor of Theotokos "Unexpected Joy" Orthodox Mission, Ash Grove, Mo.

Among the many other conference speakers will be Dr. Albert Raboteau, Henry W. Putnam Professor of Religion at Princeton University and author of "Slave Religion: The 'Invisible Institution' in the Antebellum South," which has become a classic in its field; and the Rev. Paisius Altschul, pastor of St. Mary of Egypt Orthodox Church, Kansas City, Mo., and editor and author, respectively, of two books on African and African-American Christianity, "An Unbroken Circle" and "Wade in the River".

There will be opportunities for corporate worship during the conference, including morning prayers at St. Paul of the Cross and Vespers at St. Raphael of Brooklyn Orthodox Church, 23300 Davison Ave. W., on June 23 and June 24, and Divine Liturgy at St. Innocent on June 25.

In accordance with its theme of bridging racial barriers, the conference will reach out to Latinos for the first time this year, through the efforts of Ss. Peter and Paul Orthodox Cathedral, 3810 Gilbert St., in southwest Detroit's Latino community. The Rev. Antonio Perdomo, pastor of St. George the Martyr Orthodox Church, Pharr, Texas, and moderator of Hisporto, a worldwide Spanish-language Orthodox discussion forum, will be at the cathedral June 24 for a Spanish-language Vespers service and community supper.

For detailed information on the conference, including a complete schedule of activities, visit St. Andrew House's Web site at www.orthodoxdetroit.com/ancientchristianity.htm or the Web site of St. Mary of Egypt Orthodox Church, Kansas City, Mo. at www.stmaryofegypt.net.

The conference is open to members of the public, as well as Orthodox Christians. Fees are $20 for a single day and $40 for the entire conference, with scholarships available. The lecture program at the Charles H. Wright Museum is free of charge. Lodging and meals are $150.
