Next week's edition of the PBS newsmagazine program RELIGION & ETHICS NEWSWEEKLY (distributed Friday, August 25 at 5 p.m., check local listings) will feature the first of a two-part series exploring ethical concerns raised by reproductive technologies.
The series begins with a report by correspondent Betty Rollin focusing on sperm donors. Sperm donation has existed for many decades, but in recent years, because of the growing number of single women and lesbian couples, the practice has become far more widespread. About 30,000 children are born each year using this method. Although the identities of the donors have been kept secret in the past, that is now changing, leading to new concerns. Is it unethical to provide donor contact information to children seeking out their biological fathers? What about the privacy rights of the donors?
In the second part of the series, to be distributed September 1 – the start of the show's 10th season on public television – correspondent Lucky Severson investigates the moral concerns over the increasing use of donor eggs by fertility clinics. Young women who donate fertilize eggs must inject themselves with powerful hormones that can cause ovarian hyper stimulation, a painful condition that is potentially dangerous when the ovaries produce too many eggs. Should stricter regulations be enforced in the U.S.? And what are the ethical implications when fertilized eggs aren't used and the embryos have to be discarded?
