National Peace Church Program Receives Major Grant

Contact: John K. Stoner (717) 859-1958

Akron, Pennsylvania. Every Church A Peace Church (ECAPC), a Christian Peace Organization inviting all churches to embrace the nonviolent, peacemaking way of Jesus, has received a grant of $500,000 for a national expansion program. The grant will be awarded in installments over the next three years.

Founded six years ago by an ecumenical group including representatives of the historic peace churches, Every Church A Peace Church promotes a vision of Christianity which is non-militaristic. It stands in prophetic relation to the Constantinian synthesis of church and state, cross and sword that has dominated Christendom since the fourth century.

The Shumaker Family Foundation of Kansas made the grant. The foundation cited its interests in spirituality and social justice, and the innovative approach of Every Church A Peace Church, as factors in awarding the grant.

“The donors apparently share our belief that the church could turn the world toward peace if every church lived and taught as Jesus lived and taught,” says John Stoner, coordinator of the organization. “The grant will enable new initiatives to reach individuals and churches across the country with a fresh look at what Jesus really did teach and live about violence, war, and peacemaking.”

“People who have given their $10 and $100 to ECAPC over the years should feel rewarded, and plan to give as much or more in the future,” said Rev. Dick Davis, board chair of ECAPC, and pastor of Peace Mennonite Church in Dallas, Texas. “The church functions by the commitment of its members one by one. The time has come for every Christian who loves Jesus and the gospel to stand up and be counted. We can be a voice for the integrity of the Gospel and Jesus’ call to be faithful followers.” Donations are encouraged and will fund the development of new educational resources for pastors, churches and small groups.

ECAPC has hired Michael Hardin, Director of The School of Peace Theology and member of the Colloquium on Violence and Religion to be Education Coordinator, and Lorri Hardin to be Executive Administrator. A search for a new National Director is underway. Founder and coordinator John Stoner will continue with the organization in a writing and speaking role.

A series of eight conferences in major cities will introduce study materials, train organizers and create a network of regional organizations, peace fellowships and congregations engaged in just peacemaking. A National Registry of Peace Churches will cap the efforts of ECAPC to create a national umbrella for Christians and congregations who are committed to living the life of Jesus today.
