TEN-CENTS-A-MEAL Challenge
to Cut Hunger in America
Debbie Tenzer, founder of
DoOneNiceThing.com, a website that encourages people to do one nice thing every Monday, announced today: "All Americans want to end hunger - and united, we can do it. We encourage everyone to put a homemade donation box or jar on kitchen tables all across America. Put in ten cents at every meal, and at the end of the month donate your collection to a food bank."
A little money goes a long way: At America's Second Harvest food bank network, most of the food is donated. Astonishingly, a $1 donation moves 20 pounds of food to hungry people, the equivalent of about 15 meals. A donation of $5 moves 100 pounds of food, or 75 meals.
"If each of us gives even $1, we'll feed a lot of people," Tenzer said. DoOneNiceThing.com is inviting the public to print out free labels for their donation boxes from the website, and learn more about how to help.
In America, one in ten households does not have enough food. That's thirty-eight million Americans. Nearly fourteen million of them are children.
A uniter, DoOneNiceThing.com calls itself a "kindness project" and embraces people of all denominations and views. Each Monday the website offers an easy "nice thing" suggestion. The site also shines the spotlight on exceptionally kind people. The website invites visitors to email their own "nice thing" ideas and names and photos of kind people, which are then posted. An example of recent postings include:
· Josh West and Michelle Norberg biked across the U.S., stopping to build new housing for hurricane survivors.
· Kathy Silverton and her friends knit tiny hats and clothes for premature babies.
· Scott Fifer, a Hollywood writer, spent a month helping orphans in Tanzania and is now raising funds to build a school for them.
DoOneNiceThing.com encourages people to extend the holiday spirit throughout the rest of the year and believes small acts can create big results. Founded in Los Angeles by Debbie Tenzer just last year, the website already has members in 35 countries and receives hundreds of thousands of hits each month.
