FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FORT COLLINS, Colo., Nov. 3, 2006—Vital Theology newsletter has expanded to 12 pages in a monthly format and added new features and an option to subscribe by e-mail, publisher David W. Reid announced today.

The award-winning, independent newsletter provides theological perspectives on issues and trends in the news. The November issue has been posted online as a free sample at www.vitaltheology.com.

“Our new ‘Vital Question’ feature provides readers with a wide variety of theological perspectives on a single topic,” said Reid. In the current issue, 10 theologians and ethicists reflect on the wisdom of making terrorism the central issue in the 2006 elections.

In the new “Opinion” section, William T. Cavanaugh, of the University of St. Thomas, considers the nation’s simultaneous affirmation of torture and denial that it occurs.

An expanded “Book recommendations” section anchors the back page of the newsletter. The current issue features three books on the Psalter selected by Nancy L. deClaissé-Walford, of the McAfee School of Theology at Mercer University.

“These new features will help the newsletter expand its niche in high-concept, religious journalism,” said Reid. “News analysis grounded in theology remains our bread and butter.”

The current issue marks the launch of a series of “Eye on the War” stories, including extensive interviews with James Turner Johnson, an expert on the just-war tradition from Rutgers University, and Glen H. Stassen, a founder of just-peacemaking theory from Fuller Theological Seminary.

In addition, Paul J. Wadell, of St. Norbert College, and Elizabeth Carmichael, of St. John’s College, Oxford University, are interviewed about the consequences of increasing social isolation in the United States.

Vital Theology has no ties to any denomination, corporation, nonprofit organization or educational institution. It has won 18 national and international journalism awards since it was founded in 2004.

“This is a smart newsletter, with thoughtful articles and original reporting throughout,” said one contest judge, a former staff editor at The New York Times. “The editors solicit multiple viewpoints, in effect allowing readers to draw their own informed conclusions.”

Members of the newsletter’s advisory board are: Stephen E. Fowl, Loyola College in Maryland; David P. Gushee, Union University; Steven Kepnes, Colgate University; Frank D. Macchia, Vanguard University of Southern California; Alan G. Padgett, Luther Seminary; William C. Placher, Wabash College; Cynthia L. Rigby, Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary; Jeanette Rodriguez, Seattle University; and William Werpehowski, Villanova University.
