"The Nativity Story" won top honors and New Way Media Fest founder David Randolph was honored at the New Way Media Fest 2006 in Berkeley, California last week. "This film lights the holiday sky and warms the family heart," said Dr. Randolph. Michael Rhodes, Hollywood producer and director, introduced the film to an enthusiastic audience at the Landmark Shattuck Cinema.
David Randolph was honored for his contributions as an educator, minister and author and Founder and Host of The New Way Media Fest, an annual event with a year-round program that brings together communications-media leaders with aspiring filmmakers seeking to improve the quality of communications. "How shall they SEE with a preacher is as important in the 21st century as how shall they hear without a preacher was in the first," according to Randolph. Randolph is a United Methodist Minister who graduated from Drew and Boston Universities.
Groody River's "Dying to Live" won the top award for a documentary for its vivid portrayal of the migrant's journey.
Armando Garcia-Davila read poetry and won Best Poetry Film for his "El Gran Viento."
Dr. Robert Reid opened the Fest in a lecture noting key ethical issues arising amid the growing influence of technology in media. Reid is head of the Communications Program at the University of Dubuque in Iowa, and a leader in the Academy of Homiletics.
Dr. Doug Adams, faith and film pioneer, led discussions on the Campus of the Pacific School of Religion at the Graduate Theological Union where he teaches. Adams is Director the Center for the Arts, Religion and Education (CARE).
"The Nativity Story makes you ask, what comes next in the story and from Hollywood," said Fest coordinator and poet David Madgalene. Answers may be forthcoming at the New Way Media Fest 2007.
