Jewish Children Write Hanukkah Letters to Bubbie and Zadie

NEW YORK -- It's Hanukkah, almost, and here come Bubbie and Zadie, a pair of magical make-believe Jewish grandparents who answer Jewish children's letters during Hanukkah every year in North America. The letters do not ask for gifts or presents, but tell Bubbie and Zadie - Yiddish words for Grandma and Grandpa -- how they celebrate Hanukkah with their families.

The letters tell heartwarming stories about how the children celebrate the 8-day festival of Hanukkah and how they view their relationships with their parents and grandparents. Over 10,000 letters have been generated since the program began in 1981.

Hanukkah begins this year on December 15 and runs until Dec. 23.

Now in its 25th year, the Bubbie and Zadie letter-writing program has a mail address on Long Island, New York, where children can send their handwritten letters and receive a letter from Bubbie and Zadie in return, free of charge. The program was created by Daniel Halevi Bloom, a Jewish writer and newspaper editor, who set up the program as a unique Jewish tradition in its own right. The thousands of letters he has received over the past 25 years attest to the power of grandparents and memory in Jewish tradition.

Square One Publications this year has re-issued Bloom's 1985 Jewish children's classic picture book, titled "Bubbie and Zadie Come to My House."

Yellow Cab Pictures in Hollywood has taken an option on Bloom's book and is in negotiations with several Hollywood producers to create an ecumenical holiday film or TV movie about Bubbie and Zadie for 2010.

To send letters to Bubbie and Zadie this year, children (and adults!), Jewish and non-Jewish, may write to this address: 115 Herricks Road, Garden City Park, New York 11040. In the age of the Internet, many adults also write to Bubbie and Zadie at their email address: bubbie.zadie@gmail.com

All letters received will be answered by Bubbie and Zadie, and the service is and always will be free of charge.

Bloom is available for media interviews.
