davidreid@vitaltheology.comFORT COLLINS, Colo., Dec. 29, 2006—An overwhelming majority of ethicists, theologians and religion scholars surveyed by Vital Theology newsletter say that justice will not be served with the execution of Saddam Hussein.
The independent newsletter surveyed 10 scholars—both Christians and Muslims—before the former Iraqi dictator’s conviction was upheld on appeal.
“No ruler should be tried by his own people, especially when they are under occupation by his enemies, governed by rulers allied with his enemies, and thirsty for his blood out of vindictiveness,” said Shams Inati, of the Center for Arab and Islamic Studies at Villanova University.
“Saddam alive is a greater deterrent to despotism and tyranny than Saddam as a corpse of a blood feud or justice avenged,” said Ebrahim E.I. Moosa, director, Center for Study of Muslim Networks at Duke University.
Erik Owens, assistant director of the Boisi Center for Religion and American Public Life at Boston College, said, “I simply believe there is no justice to be found in the deliberate execution of another human being, regardless of the circumstances.”
However, Abdulaziz Sachedina, Frances Myers Ball Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Virginia, said the Quran “shows little tolerance and clemency toward those who engage in taking innocent lives and destroying natural and environmental resources provided for the well being of the people.”
The full comments of all 10 scholars are available in the current issue of Vital Theology online at
