Nationally Known Preacher, Political Activist, and Pastor of Historic Church Authors Book Encouraging Clergy to Reclaim Prophetic Preaching

For Immediate Release
January 8, 2007

Cleveland, OH – Recently released by The Pilgrim Press is an important new book entitled Where Have All the Prophets Gone? Reclaiming Prophetic Preaching in America by Marvin A. McMickle, nationally known preacher, political activist, and pastor of Cleveland’s historic Antioch Baptist Church.

Prophetic preaching in the American pulpit has suffered a decline in the last 20-25 years, says McMickle, and several things are to blame: an overzealous preoccupation with praise and worship; a false and narrow view of patriotism; and a focus on prosperity and personal enrichment themes.

Where have all the prophets gone? Why is prophetic preaching so rarely heard in the pulpits of America, and why do so many pressing issues in our society go unaddressed and unexamined by many who preach the gospel of Jesus Christ? In Where Have All the Prophets Gone? McMickle tackles these questions head-on, and sounds a clarion call to preachers, encouraging them to learn the importance of keeping their eyes on the vision of Jesus and biblical prophets when preaching—that of doing justice, caring for others, and being equitable.

McMickle concludes: “If prophetic preaching is to be heard in proportion to the challenges and conditions that confront this country, preachers will have to find the courage and the boldness to stand up to and speak out against the people and policies responsible for those conditions.”

McMickle is pastor of Antioch Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio. He is the professor of homiletics at Ashland University and the author of six books.

The public may order the book from their local bookseller, Amazon.com, or directly from The Pilgrim Press: thepilgrimpress.com.

PRAISE for Where Have All the Prophets Gone?

“At a time in American history where media ministry has replaced genuine ministry and mega-churches have become the model for African American clergy persons and parishioners, McMickle has written one of the most important books which addresses the problems, the heresy, the misinformation and misunderstandings perpetuated by media ministry and mega-church thinking….a ‘must read’ for the generation of preachers in the 21st century who would be true to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, to the Word of God that was made flesh and to the imperative we have in ministry of serving this ‘present age.’”
—Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr., Senior Pastor, Trinity United Church of Christ, Chicago

“Long-time pastor, preacher, and politician McMickle has thrown down the gauntlet to clergy across the denominational and political spectrum. He challenges us to reclaim our prophetic voice in the pulpit and speak of what really matters—justice, compassion, and inclusion for all of God’s children. In this era of wedge issues where minorities are pitted against each other and the least among us suffers as a result, McMickle reminds us of the broader vision and calls us to once again take up the prophet’s mantle. For his sometimes agitating and always prophetic words, I am grateful.”
—Tracey Lind, Dean of Trinity Cathedral, Cleveland, and author
of Interrupted by God: Glimpses from the Edge (The Pilgrim Press, 2004)
