Washington, D.C., March 8, 2007 - RELIGION & ETHICS NEWSWEEKLY, the Thirteen/WNET New York-produced PBS news magazine program hosted by Bob Abernethy, has been recognized for broadcast excellence in awards competitions sponsored by CINE, New York Festivals and Excellence in Media.
RELIGION & ETHICS NEWSWEEKLY received two prestigious CINE Golden Eagle Awards for "Scott Neeson," the profile of a Hollywood mogul who made a life-changing commitment to helping Cambodia's most disadvantaged kids, which was reported by Lucky Severson and produced by Trent Harris; and for "DNA and Fair Trials," a look at the legal and ethical implications of post-conviction DNA exonerations, featuring correspondent Tim O'Brien with Phil O'Connor serving as producer. Since 1957, CINE has recognized the highest production standards in filmmaking and videography through its international award competition.
In addition, Severson's report examining the debate over capital punishment - "Huntsville: Death Capital," produced by Susan Grandis Goldstein - was awarded a Bronze World Medal by the New York Festivals. This award competition, which also originated in 1957, pays tribute to exceptional work in radio and television programming.
RELIGION & ETHICS NEWSWEEKLY was also honored with eight Silver Angel Awards for the following reports: "Scott Neeson" and "Peru Doctor," both reported by Severson and produced by Trent Harris; "Homeless Hospice" also reported by Severson and produced by Goldstein; "Down Syndrome" and "Basil Brave Heart," produced by Marcia Henning with correspondent Bob Faw; "Rick and Kay Warren," produced by Judy Reynolds and featuring correspondent Kim Lawton; "Rev. Gardner C. Taylor," also reported by Lawton and produced by Keisha Dyson; and "Jean Vanier," produced by O'Connor and featuring correspondent Judy Valente. Since 1977, Excellence in Media's Silver Angel Awards have recognized outstanding achievements in various fields of communications that have moral, spiritual or social impact.
Since the show's debut in 1997, RELIGION & ETHICS NEWSWEEKLY has received nine CINE, 11 New York Festival and 31 Silver Angel Awards.
