The First Baptist Church of the City of Washington, D.C.
News ReleaseWASHINGTON, March 15, 2007 – The First Baptist Church of Washington will offer the last session of a dynamic speaker series, “Faith, Giftedness, and (dis)Ability,” at 7 p.m. this Sunday, March 18, in its sanctuary at 1328 16th St. NW.
The final topic is “Caregiving: In the Arms of Faith.” Experts, theologians and others will explore the tensions between the goodness of God's creation and the particular hardships of caring for those with disability. They will also discuss the unexpected gifts that may result.
Dr. Bruce Birch, Dean and Professor at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, will lead the discussion. He will be joined by Ollie Cantos, associate director of the White House Domestic Policy Council, who has been blind since birth; Patty Marceron, long-time caregiver; and Steven Tingus, director of the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research.
“We hope to explore Christian views about and responses to disabilities and gifts in ourselves and in others,” First Baptist Pastor Dr. Jim Somerville said. “We want to offer a valuable forum about an important topic for many people.”
The audience may ask questions during the program and meet speakers at a reception following. Anyone interested is invited and encouraged to make reservations by e-mailing
