Redding, California - April 2, 2007 - The Foundation for Apologetic Information and Research (FAIR) announced today it has made information available online to correct various misrepresentations and fabrications about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) that are being propagated through a DVD titled "Jesus Christ/Joseph Smith." Corrections to the video are available at
www.josephsmithdvd.org, a web site created by FAIR. Press editors and others are encouraged to review the corrected information when reporting on the video.
Beginning on March 25th, the DVD was distributed primarily to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) through various organizations including "Concerned Christians" as well as through a coalition website listed as GoodNewsforLDS.org.
"The film unfortunately is highly inaccurate in its portrayals of key Mormon beliefs and practices, and severely distorts Mormon history," stated Scott Gordon, president of FAIR. "It is merely a rehashing of long refuted attacks against the LDS Church, except this time it is being characterized by its producers as a Christian outreach to Mormons."
Most of the videos were left at the doors of LDS homes, while some were left on the windshields of vehicles parked in church lots during Sunday services. DVDs have been distributed in Utah, Idaho, Washington, Texas, New York, Alberta, British Columbia and various other locations.
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), a watchdog group that monitors hate speech against Jewish and other groups, had previously identified "Concerned Christians" as being "Mormon bashers" when the group similarly distributed an anti-Mormon video "The God Makers." The ADL has denounced this latest anti-Mormon video as well. "It was wrong then, and it's wrong now" (see
http://www.adl.org/PresRele/ChJew_31/5013_31.htm).
