Why Are Powerful Men Drawn To Prostitution?NASHVILLE, TN – The recent allegation that New York governor Eliot Spitzer solicited a prostitute begs the question, Why would he do it? Why do politicians, celebrities, and clergy take such huge gambles, risking humiliation and shame, loss of family and position, by soliciting prostitutes?
The Rev. Becca Stevens, general editor of the forthcoming book Find Your Way Home, reveals “It is clearly not just about the need for sex…. Men of power are drawn to prostitution for exactly the same reasons as men in other stations of life. From our experience, the reason for soliciting is the same – the appeal is the anonymity of the sexual encounter.” And Stevens should know; as the founder of Magdalene, a residential community of women with a criminal history of drug abuse and prostitution, she has for more than a decade worked and lived with women who have, on average, one hundred arrests on record.
Stevens continues, “Our work is helping to dispel some of the myths of prostitution – that it’s victimless or that it’s the oldest vice in the world. From working with women all across the country, we have seen that prostitution devastates not only the women, but men, their families, and their communities. And as the average age that a woman in our program was introduced to sex is around nine, sexual abuse is at least one generation older than prostitution.”
In addition to her work as an Episcopal priest, community activist, and founder of Magdalene, Becca Stevens is the author of Hither and Yon, Finding Balance, and Sanctuary, nominated by Christianity Today as ‘Best Spirituality book of 2005.’ Find Your Way Home releases in September 2008; in it, the women of Magdalene write about twenty-four rules to live by, inspired by the classic Benedictine Rule. Stevens was previously named "Nashvillian of the Year" by the Nashville Scene and "Tennessean of the Year" by The Tennessean. Her role as founder and director of Magdalene and the non-profit business Thistle Farms has been featured on CNN and other national media.
The Rev. Becca Stevens maintains sympathy for all involved in the scandal surrounding Gov. Spitzer. “I feel for the governor, for his family, and for the woman transported secretly to Washington who served his needs. I imagine her story is as tragic as the governors.” Adds Stevens, “At Thistle Farms and Magdalene, we operate on the principle that love is the most powerful force for social and individual change in the world. Whether it’s the governor of New York or a woman who bears the scars of being bought and sold, we believe that healing is possible for all of us. ”
